Terracotta, an ancient roof tile

roofing repairs MelbourneOur terracotta tiles on the roof are very old and have had no maintenance done to them. Now they need serious repairs and replacements. I think I’m going to get terracotta again because of how classic and beautiful the tiles look. It’s actually an ancient form of ceramics, I recently discovered. As I was researching Melbourne roof repairs companies. I came across tonnes of information about the history of terracotta which is quite fascinating.

You’ve heard of the terracotta army in China right? It’s really incredible that thousands of these life-sized sculpture lay undiscovered underground for so many years.  In fact, it was more than two-thousand years that the artwork was underground and when it was discovered, it was accidentally by a local farmer. Amazing, no?

Terracotta religious art is some of the earliest forms of art known to us at this stage. They’ve discovered artists and even practical terracotta creations like figurines, reliefs and statues, tiles and vases dating back to the world’s most famous ancient civilisations, from Mesopotamia, through to Egypt and Mesoamerica. It’s been used all around the world, to create elaborate Hindu temples like Khajuraho which depicts the kamasutra, and then in the west, the classic realist sculptures of the renaissance Italian masters. I’m sure you’d recognise many of these iconic works.

Roofing repairs close to Melbourne are not biased towards repairing terracotta but I think they should be because clearly this ancient form of tiling is superior to all the others. My neighbours just built their house not two years ago and their tiles are already in need of repairs. My terracotta ones have survived 40 years or longer, well before I was living here. There is something to say for traditions that have lasted for so long.
