I do love a good company retreat, I’m not going to lie. The last company I worked at had NO idea about any of that stuff, so much so that the bosses would treat you with suspicion if you so much as took the day off to attend your grandmother’s funeral. What, you want to stay away from WORK? You need a break from WORK? Why would you want to spend time doing something that isn’t WORK? Gee, I dunno. Life isn’t all work?
Lawrence Corp really understands that stuff. All the bosses totally get that you need time off, sometimes just for the reason that you’ve been working really hard. Like, they push you hard, but if you really work up to standard, the managers visit your desk and have a chat where they encourage you to take time off to recharge. It’s so weird, but great.
Now we’ve got a company retreat happening for the whole sales department! They’re booked this awesome looking convention centre right out in…uh, somewhere. I think a regional area. It’s definitely Victoria, but I didn’t recognise the place name. Doesn’t matter, because we’re getting shuttled there with the company bus. Yep, this tech start-up has its own bus, because why not? This place is crazy, seriously. We’re not even the first team to be going, as well. They’ve been taking the whole company on these retreats, but one department at a time. I like the idea, actually. I know the people on the sales floor, but not everyone else so well. Trying to get to know everyone at once might be awkward, but now I can learn about the people in the same office as me. And also spend some time outside the office!
Hayley from HR said it was an amazing experience and it made her much more productive. And then I met Rob from IT in the carpark and he said…exactly the same thing. Actually, so did Ian from PR. The exact same phrase. Maybe the seminars we’ll be going to really hammer in the same ideas? Never mind. The function venues look top class, so I’m looking forward to a really good time!
