The Successful Geek

gamedesigncourseSome people might be a little put off by the story of how I came to pursue game design courses. Melbourne has a few of the best gaming related courses in the country. But actually this is a tale of redemption. Here’s how it all went down.

My parents used to watch my unhealthy lifestyle and antisocial behaviour and worry about me. As a child I used to binge on video games without seeing the light of day, while the sound of my TV competed with the sounds of kids playing outside. When I grew into a teen, I’d stay up so late gaming that sometimes that I’d be late for school and take naps during class to compensate. You can imagine how worried my folks were. None of us ever imagined my seemingly unhealthy obsession with technology would amount to anything. But then it did…

I was never a hopeless idiot. Although I was somewhat distracted by video games and computers as a teen (much like most teens are distracted by their crushes) I still did okay at VCE. Before I knew it, it was time to decide on a course at university.

The single day I recall most vividly is the day I discovered the video game design course. Melbourne truly is a place full of opportunities for those who love video games. The course seemed to be tailor made for me, and not just that, but seemed to lead to some valid career options. The video game course was both fun and challenging and led me to get a job that I love and that pays well. You can imagine how surprised my parents were to see me grow up to be a fully functioning adult! These days, I’m even less antisocial than I was before. I guess I shed off the shyness and met some active fun-loving people in my course that I had a lot in common with. It seems a childhood of late-night gaming isn’t all that bad after all.
