When I was a kid, I always dreamed of being a doctor. My sister and i would play ‘doctor’ and I’d put on my toy stethoscope and pretend to diagnose and treat her imaginary ailments. When I got to high school however, I started realising that perhaps science wasn’t my thing. I was hopeless at local thinking and performed better at the arty subjects and literary. By the time it got to choosing my university courses, I was bound to fall into the liberal arts.
However, my dreams of pursuing medicine have recently been revived when I discovered dry needling courses in New Zealand. I received this miracle treatment for muscle pains in my legs. It’s a particular type of pain called myofascial which is not related to inflammation but is caused by tight muscles and knots under the skin. It was so good for me that I started recommending people with the same health issues as me and we were all amazed with the results. I realised that I would really find it fulfilling to be able to help people in this way. Although I don’t have a background in medicine, I can still train to give people this treatment professionally. A lot of medical doctors and physios do the training too so I’m excited about getting reconnected with the world of medicine and health sciences.
Later in the year we plan to move to Adelaide. Dry needling courses, like the one I’m doing, can actually set up you to start your own practice. I’m going to have a room in my house where I can treat my patience. Eventually, in the long term, I hope to incorporate other treatments like massage and maybe even dietetics, which really interest me as well. That would be really cool.
